Free Backup Software - Features

Simply download the file and install the file replication software to a directory of your choice. Running the software is a snap, just click on datareplicator.exe and you'll be prompted with a few basic questions.

Data Replication - Question 1 asks for the backup destination. As you replicate files, they will be stored in the location you enter here.

Data Replication - Question 2 gives you the option to exclude drives from being replicated. The software will not replicate any data located on these drives.

Data Replication - Question 3 is set to perform a backup once. If need to replicate files every other hour for example, you would enter 120. The backup interval is in minutes and will replicate any data that has changed since the last backup was performed.

Data Replication - Question 4 simply gives you the option to be notified once all files have been replicated. The default is to replicate data without notification.

Data Replication V1

If you have your flash drive inserted, you'll notice that after completing the initial configuration, your USB drive will appear in the window with a check box next to it. If you check the box, data replication will be made available for this device.

You also notice that by clicking on the flash drive, the Backup Now button will become active allowing you to begin replicating file immediately.

File Replication Log

You have the ability to review the data replication process as it happens. Any critical errors or backup warning messages will appear in this box.

Caution: If you turn on full logging, every file that is replicated will be logged and can quickly add up, so unless you need to debug, stick with the default - off.

Data Replication - Backup Direction

You can do more than simply backup USB devices! If you double click on your backup device (located under volumes), you'll notice the ability to change direction, replicate to USB or Replicate to Hard Drive (from USB).

Perhaps you want to backup work files to your flash drive? Simply choose the folder you wish to replicate and the data within that folder will be duplicated to the root of your Flash drive. At any time, you may select the 'Force full backup' to duplicate files immediately.

Encrypted Data Replication

Data replication can occur in either encrypted or non-encrypted mode and works when backing up files to or from the USB drive. This encryption helps prevent data from being read should you loose your USB drive.

Here is how backup encryption works. Enter the settings area and enter a password for use while encrypting. This password can be anything you want, just don't forget it should you need to decrypt the files on another system.

>There is also a check box labels 'Encrypt all files' that you'll also need to select. The box under this label has a few extensions listed; they are .txt, .doc, .xls, .rtf, .htm, .html and tell the data replication program to encrypt any file with these extensions. Files with extensions not listed here will NOT be encrypted.

You're almost there! What you just completed was the overall settings (global) for data encryption. Each device (or volume) can have separate settings as well, so, from the main screen, double click on the volume you wish to encrypt and select 'use encryption'.

That's it! Now, any time you replication data to or from the flash drive, your selected extensions will be encrypted. This works great in a shared environment, say a network perhaps, were you want to backup your flash data, but don't want someone else on the network to view your data :)
